My daughter Mia has always been a huge animal lover. When she and her friends used to set up their annual summer lemonade stand, proceeds didn’t go into their pockets. They always went to the SPCA. Mia also pressured us for months to get a dog and that’s how Milo became such an important part of the household. Mia is also the resident baker, cupcakes being her specialty. So when she heard about National Cupcake Day – a cross-country fundraiser to animals in need – she was determined to get involved. This past February Mia and her friends raised $50 for the BC SPCA and as a company, WESTSIDE Realty donated $500 to the cause. We’re passionate about taking part in this community’s events, from block parties, to bike races to bake sales. We work here, we live here and yes, we play here. We truly enjoy where we live so it is great to be able to get involved and support local activities that enhance our community.
It’s the energy of Fiesta Days that’s my favourite. It’s an annual start of summer weekend-long carnival and WESTSIDE is one of the patron sponsors of the event. The carnival includes rides, games, music, a silent auction and a parade that shuts down 10th Avenue on the Saturday. I won’t say that this neighbourhood is sleepy, but it really livens up over the course of this weekend, bringing everyone out into the streets and parks.

As any Vancouverite can tell you, cycling in this city is pretty serious business. The UBC Grand Prix race in July always draws a crowd, but it’s the kid’s race that allows them to tour the adult course that gets the most applause. My son Luca has been in it a few times – he’s the one on the left below.
